Replace The Air Filter
Air filters help remove particles and allergens from the air, allowing air to enter the HVAC system when using heating or air conditioning. This means as the air filter becomes dirty, airflow becomes limited. Reduced airflow may not sound like a big deal, but air is the crucial component required for the HVAC system to work. Depending on how many people and pets live in your home, you should change your filter every 60 to 90 days. If you haven't changed the filter in a while, seasons should be the perfect reminder. Just remember to select the correct filter for your system with the right MERV rating and install it in the proper direction.
Clean The Condenser Unit & Coils
Summer and fall can be hard on the condenser (the outdoor component of your HVAC system). That's because there's usually more lawn care and leaves falling during these times. The extra leaves, lawn clippings, dirt, and debris can all get caught around the condenser, which can clog, causing a decrease in the function of your HVAC system. Thankfully, cleaning off the condenser is simple! While the system is off, sweep away as much as possible and then spray it down with a garden hose. This will help ensure your system can "breathe."
Run The Heat
Before you need to run the heat, it's always a good idea to test it out first. This way, if there are any issues, you can get heater repairs before the cold weather really sets in. When you first turn it on, you may notice a slight burning smell. This is completely normal and nothing to worry about! It's simply the dust that has accumulated burning away. However, if the burning smell persists after more than a few minutes, there may be an issue. Additionally, listen for any unusual or worrisome sounds and ensure the heater is heating properly. Clean Vents, Chimneys, & Flues

To avoid a tragedy, it's important to have roof vents, chimneys, and flues cleaned every year before winter. This will also remove traces of creosote, which is a build-up of unburned tar vapors caused by a lack of oxygen that can pose health risks. You should also invest in multiple carbon monoxide detectors and have them installed throughout your home. If you already have detectors, check to ensure the batteries are working.
