It’s no mystery why AC systems seem to fail more in the summer than in any other season. With the extra heat and increased demand, your HVAC will show more wear and tear. However, with a few simple steps, you can increase the efficiency of your AC and help ensure you stay cool all summer long.
Is your AC unit already not keeping you cool enough? Contact Bloomington Heating & Air today to schedule an appointment for air conditioner repairs.
Schedule Maintenance
Routine AC maintenance can catch issues early and save you money on repairs. It can also save you from roughing the heat for a day or night or having to get emergency AC repairs, which can be costly and inconvenient. We typically suggest scheduling AC maintenance in the spring and fall before extreme temperatures begin, but there’s no time like the present if you haven’t had AC maintenance recently.
Clear Vents
Similar to a dirty filter, dirty vents can throw off the way your HVAC system works. Even if the AC produces an abundance of cool air, if the vent isn’t clear, all of that cool air will be wasted in the duct system. And it’s not just dirt and dust that you should be mindful of either. Vents should have a clearance space of at least 10 inches. That means vents shouldn’t be blocked with furniture, artwork, or rugs, even in unused rooms. Just one blocked vent impacts the way the rest of the system works.
Keep The Unit Clean
Just like a filter, the outdoor portion of the HVAC unit is often overlooked. Out of sight, out of mind. However, the outdoor unit is even more likely to get dirty from lawn care, storms, and from being outside. Be sure to clear dirt, debris, trash, leaves, and twigs from around the unit, which can cause overheating and malfunction. It’s a good idea to check the unit regularly, but it’s especially important after summer storms and hurricanes.
Change The Filter
Many avoidable HVAC issues start with a dirty filter. Even though the filter is often forgotten, it plays a vital role in the function of the HVAC system. A filter does its job well when air is pulled through the filter, removing debris and allergens. If the filter is dirty, it creates a clog, reducing airflow and taxing the HVAC unit unnecessarily. You should change filters every three months, but you should change the filters more frequently if your home has more occupants or pets. Be sure to check the filter at least once a month to ensure there are no issues.
Additional Cooling
Not all of the cooling burden needs to fall on your HVAC unit. Quality insulation and fans can go a long way to ensure that temperatures stay moderate in your home without taxing the AC. For more tips on additional cooling options, check out how to cool your home without the AC.
Consider Upgrading
If your AC isn’t cutting it and the cost of AC repairs seems unreasonable, consider a new AC installation. Newer models are more effective at cooling homes while requiring less energy to run and will last you many years. It might be a large investment now, but the savings in energy, repairs, and maintenance will help you recoup the cost before you know it. You also won’t have to worry about the inconvenience and safety issues of your AC unit dying in the middle of a heatwave!
